THERE was drama at the sitting to elect new mayor where an ANC councillor, Nonhlanhla Stompi Lettie Mthembu fell sick collapsed and died on (today) Monday during the sitting to elect the new executive mayor of Johannesburg, the spokesman for the City of Johannesburg said.
The ANC caucus had asked for an adjournment earlier to allow the woman to recover after she became sick. But she died minutes after the caucus left the venue. The Economic Freedom Fighters had objected to the break, suggesting that the councilor be allowed to vote first.
Confirmed dead by paramedics her untimely death sent a sombre mood among councillors whostopped the singing and heckling at each other inside the city hall.
The ANC caucus asked that the mayor and whip of the council be elected in the same vote and that the council meeting then be adjourned out of respect for the deceased.
Meanwhile SA’s opposition’s Herman Mashaba was voted mayor
Mashaba received 144 votes against incumbent mayor Parks Tau’s 125. The DA’s Kevin Wax was elected council chief whip with 146 votes. Solomon Mogase of the ANC received 123 votes
The highly charged council meeting that followed the local government elections saw a long drawn voting process marred by objections from the parties.
