Cancel Bikita West by election, says Tajamuka as violence rises

January 18 2017 – SEVERAL NGO’s have expressed outrage  at the assault of  NCA Bikita West candidate Maddock Chivasa and his election agent  Thomas Mudzamiri  last night  with  pressure  group Tajamuka calling for the  cancellation of the Bikita West by election, scheduled for 21 January, saying the by  election will not reflect the ” true” will of its constituents.

“The by-election should be stopped  immediately until ZEC and the government of Zimbabwe can ensure genuinely free and fair elections and guarantee peace and security for opposition candidates. As it stands, the winner of this election will not be recognised as a true and legitimate choice of the people of Bikita West,” says Tajamuka spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi.

Reports allege the two were attacked by 10 unidentified people, whom Chivasa alleges were Zanu-PF youth  driving in a green Ford Everest vehicle that had no number plates.

Chivasa says the car followed them during the day  while they were campaigning  and then around 10pm as they were about to depart Nyika Growth point,  the youth  ambushed them and started assaulting them, armed with guns, accusing them of being “sell-outs”.

Chivasa says he was assaulted by a gun in the face and also sustained a broken arm while  Mudzamiri’s ribs were broken.

According to Heal Zimbabwe Trust  they have recorded 57 human rights violations in  the voilatile Bikita West since  November 2016.

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition also says it  is concerned that the “culture of violence” adding that the events  in Bikita West raise fears of another bloody election in 2018 and a repeat of the 2008 elections.

Also running for the seat, which fell vacant after the imprisonment of  Munyaradzi Kereke are Zanu-PF’s  Beauty Chabaya, Zimbabwe People First’s  Kudakwashe Gopo and independent Heya Shoko. – www.ZimsInSA.com reporter
