Joburg’s N1 South closed after milk tanker catches fire

A MILK tanker caught fire on Monday evening around 7pm on the N1 South near New Road in Midrand, Johannesburg, bringing traffic on the busy highway to a halt and closing off the road for at least an hour.

“Please note that the N1 south near New Road in Midrand has been closed off for all traffic due to a milk tanker that is on fire,” ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

“The tanker is on the side of the road, however, for safety reasons the highway has been closed until the fire department can extinguish the flames.”

Vermaak said there were no injuries reported. He said the highway remained closed and urged motorists to use alternative routes.

ER24 sent a “special thanks” to South African Police Service and Johannesburg Metro Police Department that arrived in minutes and closed off the N1 for the fire to be put out.

The cause of the fire was not known as yet.

ER24 later tweeted: “N1 highway south at New Road Midrand NOW OPEN after tanker fire. Thank you to everyone that assisted. Traffic still slow.” – ANA
