Musona to captain Warriors as Billiat jets in for national duty
June 07 2017 -KV Oostende winger Knowledge Musona has been named the new captain for the national team, as media reports say Sundowns striker Khama Billiat finally joins his teammates in Harare today for national duty.
Musona takes over from Willard Katsande, who has retired from international football ,playing his last game for the national team, a 4-2 defeat in an AFCON 2017 final group match against Tunisia.
Coach Norman Mapeza announced the widely expected appointment of Musona as the national team’s new captain to reporters during the training session.
Musona will be deputised by Ngezi Platinum captain Patson Jaure.
Musona has made 41 appearances scoring 18 goals for Zimbabwe since making his debut against the South Africa in a friendly in 2010. He scored a blinder of a goal vs Tunisia at AFCON 2017 beating two defenders and smashing the ball beyond the goalkeeper. His goals have also helped Belgian League outfit KV Oostende.
He was part of the Zimbabwe team that qualified for the 2017 AFCON in Gabon where he scored a belter in Zimbabwe’s last group match.
The Belgian based forward is to see his first action since being named captain on Sunday, when Zimbabwe face Liberia at home in their first match of qualifying for the 2019 AFCON in Cameroon.
Meanwhile striker, Khama Billiat will, eventually, join his national football team mates in camp today, after his South African club Mamelodi Sundowns gave in to pressure and released the player for national duty after his SA team had reportedly refused to release the player for Sunday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Liberia set for the National Sports Stadium, saying he was injured.
