Tsvangirai and Maimane hail ECOWAS’s stance in the Gambia
January 21 2017 – THE executive committee of the Southern African Partnership for Democratic Change (SAPDC), which MDC T president, Morgan Tsvangirai is an executive member, on Saturday (today) has hailed the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) for intervening to enforce the democratic will of the people of Gambia.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the actions of the former president Yahya Jammeh who worked to subvert constitutionalism,” SAPDC chairman and SA opposition DA leader Mmusi Maimane said after the organisation’s second meeting on Saturday.
The executive committee reviewed a draft charter of Southern African opposition parties which commits them to fight for justice and democracy in the region.
The SAPDC was established in October 2016 at a meeting of Southern African opposition parties held in Johannesburg, with the intention of promoting democratic change in Southern Africa. All members of SAPDC also sit in the parliaments of their respective countries.
“The platform is now a registered legal entity comprised of four directors, namely Mmusi Maimane (SA) as chairperson, Dr Nevers Mumba (Zambia) as deputy chairperson, and with Tsvangirai and Manuel Fernandes of Mozambique as executive members,” says SAPDC.
“Ecowas demonstrates the requisite leadership, which SADC [Southern African Development Community] should strive to emulate in order to ensure peaceful and democratic transitions in the region,” SAPDC deputy chaiman and former vice president of Zambia Mumba says in the statement. – ANA visit www.zimsinsa.com
