Zim cops detain and fire shots at activists

CRISIS in Zimbabwe Coalition Information Officer, Edgar Gweshe and two others have been detained by the Zimbabwe Prison Services at Harare Remand Prison.

The three were part of a group of over 50 Civil Society member who had gone to Harare Remand Prison on a solidarity visit for arrested National Vendors Union of Zimbabwe (NAVUZ) leaders and vendors.

According to Crisis in Zimbabwe the ZP Service also fired shots to disperse the group of activists, who were protesting at the vendor’s continued .

“ The Superintendent in Charge of the Prison briefly addressed the activists and accused them of trespassing before ordering two ZPS officers fire their guns, says a Crisis statement released late today.


The activists had gone to Harare remand as precursor to a press conference where Civil Society demanded the immediate release of the NAVUS officials and vendors currently re-manded in custody.

Crisis claims their lawyer Advocate Tonderai Bhatasara of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights had been denied entry into the prison.
