Zim govt to hire doctors as contractors

HARARE – IN A move that has been described as unprecedented  in pre and post independent Zimbabwe  the ministry of health says it wants  to introduce a contract for  junior doctors with effect from  this year.

In a  contract drafted by the Health Services Board (HSB), with  all  new junior doctors are being  told  that their employment terms will now be regulated by a contract that has been drafted and approved by one , the HSB.

“This is not only illegal but smacks of immorality and sinister intentions as the employer has become the drafter of the contract, the negotiators of the contract and the sole implementers of a labour contract which must be negotiated and agreed on by both parties,” says the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association statement (ZHDA).

The ZDHA cays the new contracts do not stipulate how much a doctor earns, or   provide  a salary for  female doctors on maternity leave during their internship, and does not guarantee the payment of an on-call allowance.

According  to the ZDHA  the new contract allows  a doctor  to  be fired once the government gives a one month notice of termination.

“This shocking move comes barely a few months after the partial resolution of a bitter labour dispute between doctors and the HSB and indeed it has now proved to the rest of the world that the Health Services Board and the permanent secretary have nothing good to offer to doctors anymore and are only preoccupied with manipulating young and unsuspecting doctors,” says the ZHDA  statement.

The statement also  calls upon the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe to intervene . -www.zimsinsa.com
