Zim woman raped in Johannesburg
May 22 2017 – THE Zimbabwean Embassy in South Africa is investigating an alleged gang rape of a 22-year-old Zimbabwean woman based in Johannesburg.
The woman was allegedly gang raped by 11 Tanzanians last week in Johannesburg, on her way home from work.
According to Zimbabwe Consul-General in SA Batiraishe Mukonoweshuro they are investigating the case.
“The team is out trying to find out what happened but I’m told she was raped by Tanzanians not Nigerians as we had been earlier told” says Mukonoweshuro .
The victim was working at a tavern that closes very late at night or in the early morning hours.
Tanzanians could have ganged on her as she was heading home, says Mukonoweshuro.
Though SA, particularly Johannesburg has always been notorious for high crime rates, crime particularly against women has spiraled in the past few weeks.
Last week Justice and Correctional Services minister Micheal Masuthu says sentences between 10 and 15 years has increased by 77 percent and those sentenced to 20 years and above increased by a whopping 439 percent, whilst lifers grew by 413 percent, showing that South Africa was becoming a more violent society.
