Zuma allows public access to refugee hearings

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma has signed the  Refugees Amendment Act  into law, which allows the public and the media access to Refugees Appeals Authority proceedings in appropriate cases, the Presidency said under the Refugees Act, 1998.

The amendment became necessary after the Constitutional Court declared that it was unconstitutional to bar the media and members of public from attending proceedings of the refugee appeal board.

The country’s highest court gave Parliament until September 26, 2015 to correct the anomally. –ANA
