Mantashe was speaking to the media at Luthuli House following Tuesday’s meeting of the party’s extended National Working Committee.
Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, Mantashe and Treasurer General Zweli Mkize criticised President Jacob Zuma following the reshuffle for not having adequately consulted the party on the changes to be made.
Mantashe says they’ve agreed that they should resolve their differences internally.
“The point we’re making is that we must find it adult enough to close the door, beat each other up even if you find me with a blue eye. I can develop a narrative that I bumped against a pole or something, rather than the leadership of the ANC going public on their disagreements.”
Meanwhile, Mantashe says a framework to monitor the performance of Cabinet ministers will be established.
This in response to widespread criticism following the recent Cabinet reshuffle that non-performing Ministers retained their portfolios while those that had performed, including former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, were axed.
Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini has in this respect, received specific mention with the ANC alliance partner, the South African Communist Party (SACP).
