THE African National Congress (ANC) Greater Johannesburg Region said on Thursday (today) that it will be taking Joburg city’s Mayor Herman Mashaba, to the Human Rights Commission for the recent comments he made about illegal immigrants.
“We will tutor Herman Mashaba on why it was careless of him to make such a statement given the history of the region with xenophobic attacks,” says a ANC Joburg statement.
“Over the past 22 years, there have been seven incidents of xenophobic attacks that led to many foreign nationals losing their lives, their homes destroyed and their shops looted by those who blame foreigners for the levels of unemployment and crime,” ANC Joburg adding that his utterances were “impolitic” and showed yet again his lack of understanding of what it meant to be a leader.
During his “100 Days in Office” speech last week, Mashaba said illegal immigrants without documentation in Johannesburg were linked to criminal activity in the city and called for their deportation provoking a heated reaction from foreign national community organisations in Johannesburg.
“A responsible leader would know that this is a very sensitive subject that needs to be addressed with the sensitivity it deserves with the correct authorities,” says ANC Joburg.
“The irresponsible utterances of a tenderfoot Mayor do not just appal the ANC, we are trying to prevent a diplomatic and xenophobic violent fallout. This is something the new comer Mayor won’t understand.”
Meanwhile the African Diaspora Forum has organised a march to his office now scheduled for the 19th next week because the Metro Police have not granted demonstrators the permission to demonstrate.
Says demo organisers: “We wanted to send only 14 people to hand over the memorandum to avoid the permission as by law but many civil society organisations, community leaders, South African citizens have shown interest to be part of this historical gathering. The application needs seven (7) days for approval. Since Mayor Herman Mashaba is sayiing everything concerning migrants and migration as illegal, we wouldn’t want to organise an “illegal gathering”. – Patience Rusere additional reporting ANA
